Chili chocolate brownies

A post by the excellent A2K blog  on Chocolate Orange Brownies has had me salivating for brownies. I also had a stash of chili chocolate bought from the new sweet shop in Greenwich. The final push came watching Nigella at the weekend making brownies. While she appears quite demented on the show, hamming up the supposed sex appeal, the brownies did look remarkably easy to make.

So I took A2k’s recipe and Nigellas and had a bit of a mash up. I decided to do 2 versions, one with chili chocolate, and one with  Divine’s 70% dark chocolate.

Ingredients:

  • 114g chili chocolate (the packet said 120g but my scales said otherwise. How naughty) / 100 g Divine dark chocolate
  • 100g unsalted butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 125g caster sugar
  • 75g plain flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

I was severely disappointed with the chili brownies which I felt were far too sweet and a rather off-putting pale colour. I also couldn’t taste the chili. The Divine chocolate ones were absolutely, well Divine. They weren’t as squishy as the chili brownies but I loved them. Of course, hubby was the other way round and scoffed a fair few of the chili ones.

Rather oddly, today I tried the chili ones and the sweetness has reduced and although initially I couldn’t taste the chili, the mate I was sharing with said she could at the back of her throat. She was right, I got the hit after a bit. I still prefer the darker ones though so next time I think I will try Divine’s Chocolate Brownies recipe instead.
